My Hair Regimen

As a 4C hair type, my biggest problem with my hair was moisture retention. That is what I struggled with the first couple of times I returned natural and it was out of sheer frustration that I went back to the creamy crack. But, with experience comes wisdom and after 3 big chops I can safely say that I have quite a bit of that now!

Let me let you in on a little secret – there is no secret to retaining moisture.

That’s right! Its all about getting the right products into your hair in the right order and at the right time. That’s it.

I have come to realize that taking care of your natural hair is as simple or complicated as you make it. No, you do NOT need to pick up every natural hair trend that surfaces, nor do you need to try out every new brand that is reviewed on FB. And you absolutely do not need to take the entire day to wash your hair! o_O

I do think that it is important to get your hair on a regimen and this simply means that you become consistent with your treatments.

This is my hair care regimen that is working for me and my hair at this present moment.

Weekly

Sunday is my full-on-cleanse wash day.

At this stage of my journey, I have eliminated all of the usual suspects and only wash and deep condition my hair each week. Yes, I shampoo each week – and that’s simply my prerogative.

I shampoo with Shea Moisture’s Moisture Retention Shampoo or African Black Soap; followed by a deep conditioner of my choice (see options here, here and here).

After cleansing, I apply my KimmayTube’s ph-Balanced Leave-in Conditioner to my tresses and seal with JBCO. Then, in sections, I apply Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and detangle with a denman brush and braid or twist the section of hair so that my hair is nicely stretched in the morning.

I always allow my hair to air dry.

Daily

I generally mist my hair with my DIY Moisture Mist if it feels dry and seal with a bit of JBCO and proceed to styling it as desired. If my hair doesn’t feel dry, I skip misting it as it is possible to over moisturize your hair.

Nightly

Cover with satin scarp for bed. ALWAYS.

Occasionally and as needs be…

I clay wash instead of shampoo when I feel the need to do a deep cleanse.

I do a protein treatment probably twice a year.
